Assen (NL) 2009

Rounds 11 and 12  - BSA 250 Div 1 Superkart Championship

The Div 1 Championship goes down to the wire with Trevor Roberts and Carl Hulme both able to take the number 1 plate.

Carl Hulme won the 2009 BSA National Championship for Division One Superkarts in dramatic fashion at Assen, Holland on Sunday.

After starting from pole position both Germany ’s Peter Elkmann and British Championship rival Trevor  Roberts passed him early on.  However Roberts momentarily left the circuit at the Geert Timmer chicane to allow Hulme back into 2nd place.  The Cheshire Wellness driver then gradually reeled in Elkmann and took the lead shortly after halfway.  He built on that lead and looked to be heading for an easy victory when, with just 220 metres to go his motor seized.

Hulme immediately dipped the clutch and he had just enough momentum to cross the finish line albeit at walking pace.  Inevitably Elkmann,  the 2008 European Superkart Champion inherited the victory,  but Hulme had sufficient margin in hand to get to the line before 3rd placed Trevor Roberts.  That was just enough for Hulme to kill off the Irish former World Champion’s mathematical chance of overhauling him.

Race 2 was therefore a ‘dead’ race in championship terms, but produced another entertaining spectacle that ultimately served up a repeat 1-2-3 result.

British Drivers dominated the 250 single cylinder class with Mark Vaughan taking the win and Eddie Kooiker the runners up spot.
