Race Report - Gary James Photo's - Ian Rushforth
Div 1 Podium - Left to Right P2 Gavin Bennett, P1 Trevor Roberts, P3 Malcolm Crowe James O'Reilly came away from Snetterton with overall honours after two excellent drives while his championship rivals had a variety of problems. Craig Fleming grabbed pole position for race 1 with Sam Moss alongside and championship leader James Tucker on row 2 joined by Paul Platt. O'Reilly had a misfiring engine and lined up on row 5 while reigning champion James Dredge was right at the back of the 31 kart grid. Platt took the lead at the start but a reed petal broke soon after and he toured into the pits to retire at the end of lap 1. This elevated Tucker into the lead from Fleming but Tucker also struck trouble when his gear linkage broke on the next lap. Fleming found himself in a fortuitous lead well clear of a spirited dice between Moss, Don Kennedy and O'Reilly. Fleming held first spot all the way to the flag over the remaining laps with O'Reilly claiming second place with three laps to go leaving Kennedy and Moss behind to squabble over third spot. In race 2 O'Reilly got the jump on everyone and drove a superb race to win by over 8 seconds. The main focus was on the scrap for second. Tucker and Platt started from the back of the grid and after Fleming got knocked out of the race at Russell's chicane on lap 2, their charge to the front was made easier. Platt grabbed second place at half distance and thought he had the position in the bag but on the last lap he got caught up with backmarkers which delayed him through Riches and Sears Corners. This allowed Tucker to close right up and he drafted past at the Esses to claim second place which he just held onto at the flag.

BSA National Championship for Division 1 Superkarts Rounds 5 and 6
Trevor Roberts won both Division 1 Superkart races but
had to fend off a strong challenge from Gavin Bennett. In race 1 Roberts
made easy work of the 10 lap race while Bennett struggled in second place
when his rear tyres blistered after four laps. These two finished well clear
of Carl Hulme who snatched third place from Malcolm Crowe at Riches Corner
after a brave manoeuvre with two laps to go.
In race 2 the fight for the lead was a lot closer between
Roberts and Bennett until the latter spun at the exit of Russell's Chicane
with two laps remaining. Bennett recovered without losing his second place
but had handed Roberts a four second lead that he was never going to lose.
Hulme lacked a bit of straight line speed in race 2 and couldn't challenge
Crowe this time around. Crowe picked up third place with Hulme next ahead of
Lee Harpham who started from the back of the grid after engine problems in
race 1 and then lost his rear brakes after two laps which resulted in an
excursion across the grass at Russell's chicane.

Notes
MSA Championship
Reigning champion Jason Dredge only managed two very
slow laps in practice and started at the back of the grid when his engine
ran very rich while running in a new barrel and exhaust pipe. 'We got the
carburation wrong and didn't have enough time to pit and change the
jetting. In race 1 he only got as far as the Bombhole on lap 1 before the
engine seized.
Craig Fleming was lucky to secure victory in race 1
when the engine lost power with one lap to go to the finish. On closer
inspection after the race it was found that the big end bearing had
failed. Fortunately he was able to put on a spare engine for race two but
all the hard work was for nothing when he tangled with Daniel Clarke under
braking for Russell's chicane on lap 2.
Rookie long circuit driver Toby Davis, who is only 18,
had an excellent run to finish fifth in race one but retired in race two
when a fuel line came off following an excursion across the grass at
Riches. He was voted driver of the day and picked up a box of Pro Clean
goodies for his efforts.
Division 1 Championship
The first five drivers on the grid were all inside the
existing Division 1 Superkart lap record and the top four were all quicker
than the pole position time set by Kieran Clark in the Formula Renault
BARC Championship.
During the day the Superkart times got quicker and
Trevor Roberts set an outstanding lap record of 1m 05.476s (107.32mph)
over 2.5 seconds inside the previous best and nearly three seconds quicker
than the Formula Renault BARC times.
Trevor Roberts and Gavin Bennett were pushing their
karts so had that they both suffered from blistered tyres during the day.
